WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP
ENDLESS MOUNTAINS COUNCIL OF THE
ART

Supplies needed:
watercolors
(tubes or ½ pans) board (approx. 17x22), brushes,
water container, palette (Styrofoam tray), and
masking tape.
Suggested additional supplies: brushes,
artist grade watercolors, papers, natural sponges,
gum Arabic, elastic band, masking fluid, tape,
spray bottle
Material covered: preparing
paper, setting up palette, techniques for applying
paint, and painting
List of techniques:
- glazing- overlaying washes of transparent
color
- lifting color- removing color with brush,
sponge, paper towel, tissue, or Exacto knife
- masking- preserving the white paper with
masking fluid, crayon, or tape
- dry brush- painting with a bare minimum of
paint
- setting color- adding vinegar to the color
so that when glazing the underlying color will
not lift
- Gum Arabic- a binder watercolor that
consists of gelatin and glycerin, that will
give that paint extra body and make it easier
to blend – enriches the color
- wash- brushstrokes of fluid paint
- on dry surface
- on wet surface
- adding water to a wash
- flat wash
- graduated wash
- granulated wash with cerulean blue,
ultramarine blue, burnt umber, raw umber
or yellow ochre
- spray bottle- keeping the paper wet,
diluting a wash, or creating a texture
- splattering paint and using salt- to
create textures
- starting a painting
- value sketch
- ink drawing value
- organizing composition (using elbows)
- attacking the white paper

Class size
is limited and subject to cancellation for lack of
enrollment. Paid registration one week prior to the
first class will determine status. Scholarships and
subsidies are available to economically
disadvantaged individuals as determined by EMCA's
board of directors. Call EMCA (570) 836-3622 for

All classes are held at the EMCA
Center, 302 West Tioga Street, SR 6 Box 144,
Tunkhannock. Class
status determined by paid registration due 1 week
prior to first session. EMCA reserves the right
to cancel a class and return payment because of
insufficient enrollment. Limits apply and classes
will be filled as registrations are received.
